NORWELL HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Dan Carton - Class of 1980
Dan Carton was a four-year, three season student athlete at Norwell High School, earning 9 varsity letters while competing in football, indoor track and track and field.
The highlight of Dan’s Clipper football career was catching a 47-yard game winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to play in Norwell’s thrilling 18-14 victory over archrival Hanover during the Thanksgiving Day game in 1979.
Dan captained the indoor track and track and field teams in 1980, his senior year. During the 1980 indoor track season, Dan set school records in the 50-yard dash and the 300-yard run (which still stands today). In track and field, he capped an undefeated senior season by setting league-best times in the 50-yard dash, 100-yard dash and the 220-yard dash, as well as a member of the 4X400-yard relay team. The time that this 4X400-yard relay team set (3:28) still stands as an NHS record time.
After graduating from Norwell High School in 1980, Dan competed as a sprinter at Boston College where he was a letterman on the BC men’s varsity track team, running in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team.Ten years after graduating from NHS, Dan returned to Norwell High School as a coach for the boys’ track and field team. Under his leadership, the boy’s team returned to prominence, as they became South Shore League champions during his final year of coaching. In his four years as a coach at Norwell High School, Dan coached one New England champion, one Massachusetts state champion, and seven Division 4 champions.
Dan resides in Norwell with his wife, Jacqui, and is the proud father of Nick, Bryan and James. He has been actively involved in Norwell Youth Sports for more than 20 years.
